How are there even people out there like this?! Michelle Carter, an 18-year-old from Massachusetts, is facing involuntary manslaughter charges after she allegedly encouraged her online boyfriend to commit suicide via text message. Prosecutors assert that Conrad Roy III, who was found dead on July 13, 2014 in his truck after succumbing to carbon monoxide poisoning, was influenced by Carter's words via text. Now, the text messages have been released, and they are absolutely sickening. Multiple times, Carter encourages Roy to "just do it," writing things like: "You have to just do it. You have everything you need. There is no way you can fail. Tonight is the night. It's now or never." And regarding people's eventual reaction when he dies: "Everyone will be sad for a while but they will get over it and move on." When Roy hesitated about whether or not he actually wanted to die, Carter responded: "You always say you're gonna do it, but you never do. I just want to make sure tonight is the real thing." Carter even researched methods of suicide, eventually deciding on carbon monoxide poisoning, but remaining skeptical as to whether Roy would actually go through with it, she wrote: "But I bet you're gonna be like ‘oh, it didn't work because I didn't tape the tube right or something like that. I bet you're gonna say an excuse like that…you seem to always have an excuse." On the day of his death, Roy took his sisters out for ice cream in an attempt to show them that he loved them. He texted Carter about it in this exchange: CONRAD: I just don't know how to leave them, you know. CARTER: Say you're gonna go to the store or something CONRAD: Like, I want them to know that I love them. CARTER: They know. That's one thing they definitely know. You're over thinking. CONRAD: I know I'm over thinking. I've been over thinking for a while now. CARTER: I know. You just have to do it like you said. Are you gonna do it now? On the night of the death, once Roy actually started to go through with it, Carter kept pushing him to finish. She would later text a friend about the suicide, writing: "Like, honestly I could have stopped it. I was the one on the phone with him and he got out of the car because [the carbon monoxide] was working and he got scared. I fucken [sic] told him to get back in." Apparently, very soon after the death, Carter then played it off as though she had no idea where Roy could be when he wouldn't answer text messages. Chillingly, Carter even went so far as to text Roy's sister trying to sound casual: "Do you know where your brother is?" But deep down, Carter understood what she did, and how messed up it was. When the cops started poking around and investigating Roy's suicide, Carter texted a friend: "It's something [cops] have to do with suicides and homicides and [Roy's mother] said they have to go through his phone and see if anyone encouraged him to do it on text and stuff. [If] they read my messages with him I'm done. His family will hate me and I can go to jail." What can you say about all of this? There's literally nothing to even be said. Disgusting.
